Trev's Top Tips

Learning to play with stride (Part 1)

Here we have the first of three videos on how to learn to play in the Stride Style. A style of playing the piano made famous by the likes of Fats Waller and Mary Lou Williams. In this clip you are shown how to stride your first chord of G flat that accompanies a simple right hand part. A basic use of sustain pedal is also explained.

Learning to play with stride (Part 2)

In the second video we cover the way to play an answering chord. Again as in part one you are shown a gradual building of a D flat seventh chord. Once mastered you will really begin to hear a development towards a stride style of playing as your co-ordination skill continue to improve.

Learning to play with stride (Part 3)

In the third part the B chord is explained and added to your two existing chords as Trev shows you how to accompany some simple melodies. Trev takes you through two pub piano classics, namely “Oh Susannah” and “Roll Out The Barrel” showing how to double up the voicings in the right hand to give a fuller sound to your playing.
